the borough’s first front-line apparatus were 8 man human powered wooden hand pumpers named the “Union” and the “Jersey Blue.”
Delivered in the fall of 1873 from Manchester, NH via railroad and served the department as Engine Company. No. 1 through the early 20th Century.
Currently Engine 5 serves as a ceremonial antique. The apparatus has a 1,000-gallon-per-minute pump, a 300-gallon tank, and a hose bed retrofitted as a casket for firefighter funerals.
